Spartan Military

The Spartan army stood at the centre of the Spartan state, whose citizens' primary obligation was to be good soldiers. Subject to military drill from infancy, the Spartans were one of the most feared military forces in world history. At Sparta's heyday in the 6th to 4th centuries BC, it was commonly accepted that "one Spartan was worth several men of any other state."

Modifiers:
+ 4 Hoplites (+3 for faction type and +1 for choosing specific modifier)
+1 Archers (faction type bonus)
+1 Light cavalry

- 1 Swordsmen
-2 Any Cavalry

Hoplites

Spartan Hippeis Hoplites (Q13 really Q9):These men are the best 300 homoioi selected for their valour and combat abilities by the 3 "hippagretai". They form the Spartan king's personal guard and their name means horsemen, but of course they always fight on foot as hoplites.

Spartan Homoioi Hoplites(Q10 really Q6):The main power of the lacedaemonian army are the "homoioi" (the equals). These Spartans have completed the "agoge" training and are fully professional soldiers. They have full rights and obligations in Lacedaemonian society and they are the most disciplined and feared fighters in the Hellenic world, and with good reason.

Lacedaemonian Perioikoi Hoplites (Q7 really Q3):They are chosen hoplites recruited from the cities in Laconia and Messenia under Spartan rule. Their name means "who lives around" and are free citizens who control the trade and the commerce. Although they are not the awesome force of the Homoioi, they are still very capable warriors.

Archers/Slingers

Perioikoi archers(Q7 but really Q6): Toxotai, are elite archers trained by Cretans and as good as them, both in shooting their composite arrows and in melee fighting.

Helot Slingers (Q5 but really Q4):The numerous helots who are public slaves mostly, follow the Lacedaemonian army in war and fight as "psiloi" (light troops). It is said that the "helot psiloi" were the most well equipped of all the greek psiloi.

Javelin

Skiritai (Q8):Covered in carbon dust to prevent detection for their mostly nocturnal missions. Destined to exploit every opening in the enemy battle line, or create one if need be. They are especially good against cavalry. The skiritai are "perioikoi" (locals) recruited from the province of Skiritis which lies between Laconia and Arcadia. They carry the hoplon shield and can fight as hoplites, however they became famous due to their commando-like skills and their abilities to fulfill special operations. They are some of the most hardy, agile and fast moving soldiers around, and later they served as hamippoi in the Lacedaimonian army. They carry a leaf shaped sword and a couple of spears to throw as a missile weapon. Light enough to chase peltasts, but could hold against most armored units.

Helot Akontistai (Q3):Helot Akontistai were the bread and butter of Spartan skirmish troops. They wouldn’t stand in battle, but they would certainly pepper the enemy with spears. Often, though, they were just a meat shield. Akontistai would form up in loose order 2-4 lines deep. Nearing the enemy up until range they would pepper the enemy with the 3-8 javs they carried. They were armed with a small pelte shield and a small knife for self defense.

Heavy Cavalry

Hippeis Xystophoroi (Reduced to Q7 from Q9):The Hellene Hippeis Xystophoroi follows the practical need of a heavy cavalry to counter that of the hostile Makedonian neighbor. While not quite as well trained or lethal as the Makedonian heavy cavalry, they are still a battle-winning component of any army. They are armored in a bronze cuirass, helmet, and greaves and carry the deadly xyston lances and kopis swords. They should be used as any heavy cavalry should be, as a shock force to hit and roll up enemy flanks. Though they well suited for the job, they still lack the élan and martial prowess of the Hetairoi that the Diadochoi posses.

Light Cavalry

Light Lancers (Reduced to Q7 from Q8):Light lancers are fast, lightly equipped cavalrymen who rely on hit-and-run charges where the killing power of their lances are maximised. Although they have cavalry swords for close quarters fighting, a lack of armour means once the melee becomes protracted they are susceptible to enemy counterattacks: slugging it out with heavy forces is not sensible for these soldiers. Rather, these men should operate on the periphery of battles where they can ride down enemy skirmishers and missile troops. They can be thrown into to heart of the fighting if necessary, or when a weakened unit's flank or rear can be attacked.

Javelin Cavalry

Militia Cavalry (Reduced to Q5 from Q7):These light horsemen are armed with javelins and are therefore ideally suited for raids and scouting, but not very useful in a pitched battle. They should definitely be kept away from enemy cavalry, which they have no protection against. Militia cavalry, like militia hoplites, were recruited from civilian ranks only when necessary
